Coxwoldshire
Coxwoldshire refers to the group of villages which nestle comfortably under the southern edge of the North York Moors.
These are the villages of Coxwold, Byland with Wass, Husthwaite, and Kilburn. Within the area lie the ruins of Byland Abbey. In Coxwold there is Shandy Hall, the home of Lawrence Sterne, author of Tristram Shandy, the Coxwold pottery and other craft showrooms. Kilburn is famous for the 'Mouseman' furniture.
The project has recorded different groups in the area including the Husthwaite school choir, two ceilidh bands, Ampleforth College Ceilidh Band and Byland Rigg, as well as interviews with individuals. In addition there are local stories such as the Battle of Byland, The Best Landlord in England and a ghost story based on the surviving fragments of original tales in Latin from Byland Abbey.
