About us

Yorkshire Sounds (otherwise known as the North Yorkshire Audio Heritage Project) is a small organisation which has set out to record a sound picture of a group of Yorkshire villages at the turn of this century.

We wanted to record life as it is remembered by older people in the communities and current aspects of village life, together with music, songs and stories of the area.

The project has been funded by the Local Heritage Initiative, and this has enabled us to make high quality recordings using hand held recorders in the field and a portable studio for recording choirs or bands.

The funding also provided for the training of individuals in each area to used the sound equipment and to gain some basic understanding of website development.

During the project we have learned much about the difficulties of working with very large sound files. The clips you can hear on this website are mp3 files and do not reflect the quality of the CD tracks.
